1. I can't believe I forgot about Moby Dick. I agree wholeheartedly.

2. Kitchen Confidential is one of the most entertaining books I've ever read.

3. I have the same (exactly same) problem with At Last. However, her rendition of You Can Leave Your Hat On is one of my favorites.

And finally, writers is by no means confined in any way.

I would have posted this at my place, but it has been a bit meme heavy lately, so here are my answers:

1. Excluding religious texts (not that I have anything against them, but I think they're fairly well agreed upon as being essential reading and I'm looking for something a little more personal) what three books do you think everyone should read (these don't have to be favorites)?
• The Complete Shakespeare, William Shakespeare – no, I’m not trying to jock your style on this one, I just love the Bard
• Deals with the Devil, Mad at Miles and other reasons to riot – Pearl Cleage
• The Beautiful and the Damned, F. Scott Fitzgerald

2. Name three songs you know all the words to without the music playing.
• As, Stevie Wonder
• Mack the Knife – there are so many versions out there but Bobby Darin’s 1962 version live at the Sands in Vegas is the only one people need to hear… and yes, I know that version down to the improvisational tics and band instructions.

• The Autobiography of Malcolm X

Yay! It's definitely my favorite Prince song, too. Not very widely known, though, at least as Prince songs go. I think I fall somewhere between Cynthia and Lucy. I'd call myself an open-minded skeptic, but probably a little more Lucy than Cynthia.

You made my heart leap when I got to the line about Starfish & Coffee. For reasons best explained with a whiskey in one and too much visual punctuating with the other, that is my all time favorite Prince song. I am curious - do you fancy yourself more of a Cynthia or a Lucy?

I know that I'm practically alone on The English Patient, but I just couldn't get behind it. I was so mad at the end that she finally did what he asked after dragging him around for 2 and a half hours that I nearly threw things at the screen.

I would totally duet with you on I Dreamed a Dream, but it is universally acknowledged that I should never be heard singing by another human being. So I sing in the shower or in the car with the windows up and the music loud.

Also, TOTALLY agree on your overrated movies list. (Although I do like "The English Patient.") Also, um, you and I could duet on "I Dreamed a Dream." 'Cause of course I know all the words to that one, too.
