And Another Thing...

Let me begin by saying that I don't believe for one second that Western Medicine is the end-all of anything. I never go to the doctor unless something is bleeding profusely or falling off. I have great faith in acupuncture and herbal remedies. Acupuncture is the only thing that ever made my insomnia go away and stay gone. That being said, I think chiropractors are fucking hacks.

My Bikram studio is owned (in whole or in part - I don't know which) by a man who is also a chiropractor. He's nice enough. He does"cross-pollinate" a bit more than I think is cool, though - especially when, according to just about everyone who's ever been to Bikram teacher training, all you need is the yoga... But I digress. Anyway the other day I heard the hack/owner talking to someone about being a "doctor" and it just pissed me off. I understand that he has a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. I know he's been to a lot of school, however the term "doctor" is entirely misleading when used in casual conversation.

When someone asks what you do and you say, "I'm a doctor," it has certain connotations. People do not assume that you hold a doctorate in some random subject. They assume that you hold a Doctor of Medicine degree. If someone asks your advice as a student in your yoga studio and you throw in, "... believe me, I'm a doctor," it's still misleading. You are leading people to believe that you have a degree in medicine. Now, probably anyone who's been going to my studio for any length of time knows that the dude is a chiropractor, but I still don't like it.

Again, I don't have any special love for doctors. But if you intentionally mislead people I have to call you an ass. If someone were to ask him if he's a doctor, I honestly don't know what he'd say. I guess technically anyone with a doctorate could say they're a doctor, but they don't.

Now, to be fair, I think that academics who call themselves Dr. are also pretentious pricks. Whenever Oprah talks about her "good friend, Dr. Maya Angelou" I cringe. When a medical doctor introduces himself as "Dr. Whoever" I also cringe, and find another doctor as quickly as possible. But I didn't encounter these things at my Bikram studio (thank god) so that's not the focus of my rant. When any of those things happens again, I will give it the lashing it deserves.
